How to install architectural vinyl
Most architectural vinyl follows a similar dry or wet application process, from preparing the surface to positioning, working it down and trimming. Always follow the instructions supplied with your chosen finish.
Before you begin
Check your film and prepare your workspace before you start. Make sure you have enough material and confirm the finish is suitable for your surface.
- Read the instructions for your exact finish first. Its method, edge clearance and curing time take priority over this general guide.
- Confirm the finish is suitable for your surface and that the surface is clean, sound and well prepared.
- Clear a clean area for cutting and handling the film, away from dust.
- For large panels, arrange a helper and safe access.
What you’ll need
Gather these before you remove the backing from your film.
For pressing the vinyl down and working out air and water.
For trimming the film neatly to the edges.
A hard card or straight edge to keep your cut steady.
For cleaning the surface and catching runoff.
Measure every surface separately before cutting your film.
For degreasing the surface so the adhesive bonds.
For conforming the vinyl around corners and curved edges.
Installing the vinyl, step by step
Read through the process once before starting, then work one surface at a time.
- 01
Measure and cut
Measure each surface and cut the film roughly 20–30 mm larger on every edge. Keep the release liner attached and check the pattern direction.
- 02
Clean and degrease
Thoroughly clean the surface, then degrease it so no dust, oil or residue remains. The adhesive only bonds to a clean, sound surface.
- 03
Position the film
Peel back a little of the liner, position the film with a small overlap on every edge, and tack it in place before removing the rest of the liner.
- 04
Work it down
Using the applicator, work from the centre outwards with firm, overlapping strokes to press the vinyl down and push out any air.
- 05
Conform and wrap edges
Warm the film gently with a heat gun where it needs to stretch around corners or curved edges, then wrap and press it down.
- 06
Trim and finish
Hold a guide against the edge and trim the excess with a sharp knife. Make a final pass over the whole surface and leave it to cure.
Ask for help
If you are not sure the finish is right for your surface, or you would rather it was fitted for you, send us the details and a photo. We supply Australia-wide and install across Perth.
Ask for help →The film won’t stick at the edges
Edges usually lift because the surface was not clean or was not degreased. Clean and degrease again, and warm the edge gently before pressing it down.
There is a bubble under the film
Work small bubbles towards the nearest edge with the applicator. Follow the method in your product’s instructions for releasing a stubborn bubble.
When can I use the surface?
Curing times vary by product. Follow the care instructions supplied with your finish before cleaning or heavy use.
